Raeta pellicula (Reeve, 1854)

Description: Lightweight, fragile. Shape well inflated, tapering almost to a spout posteriorly; length about 50% greater than height, umbo in front of midline; anterior dorsal slope convex, posterior dorsal slope strongly concave. Exterior sculpture variable from nearly smooth to strong regularly concentric growth ridges. Interior white, external sculpture showing through, only posterior muscle scar apparent, pallial sinus deep reaching to midline. Hinge as for family. Ligament internal. Shell white. Periostracum sometimes present, thin, brown.

Size: Up to 45 mm in length.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific, from Red Sea and Japan through South-East Asia to northern Australia; in eastern Australia, as far south as Batemans Bay, NSW.

Habitat: Subtidal down to 30 m, in bays, mud, muddy sand and soft clay. Mainly known from beach washup in NSW. Uncommon.
