Mactrotoma explanata (Reeve, 1854) Description: Moderately lightweight, gaping slightly at both ends. Shape length greater than height, umbo a little behind midline, ridges from umbo to antero-ventral and postero-ventral margin. Exterior sculptured only with weak irregular commarginal growth lines. Interior white, muscle scars and pallial line well-defined; pallial sinus of moderate depth. Hinge as for family. Ligament internal. Shell white. Periostracum thin, dark brown. Size: Up to 52 mm in length. Distribution: Endemic to Australia; north-west Australia and eastern Australia, from Yeppoon, Qld, southwards to Twofold Bay, NSW. Habitat: Known from beach washup, but habitat otherwise unknown. Uncommon. Comparison: This differs from M. antecedens by having a greater height in comparison to length and the pallial sinus being shallower. It is much less common that M. antecedens. Synonymy: Mactra parkesiana Hedley, 1902 was described from a specimen washed up on Balmoral Beach, Sydney, collected by Miss L.
