Lutraria rhynchaena Jonas, 1844 Description: Shape very elongate, nearly lanceolate; length about twice the height, umbo at anterior third; gaping at both ends. Exterior smooth apart from irregular growth lines. Interior white, smooth, muscle scars well-defined, pallial sinus large, extending to midline. Hinge as for family. Ligament internal, seated in a large resilifer. Shell white. Periostracum dark brown, thin, smooth. Size: Up to 120 mm in length. Distribution: Endemic to Australia: Keppel Bay, Qld, southwards and around southern Australia, to Carnarvon, WA, including Tas. Habitat: Low intertidal on sand flats and down to at least 50 m. Common. Cotton (1961) said, about this species in South Australia “Burrows deeply in sandy mud, beyond the lowest of tide marks, the siphons reaching up to the surface, the only evidence of their presence being an occasional squirt of water from the exhalent siphon”.
