Mactra eximia Reeve, 1854 Description: Shell large, moderately lightweight. Shape semicircular, ovate with low umbo. Umbo located slightly anterior to midline. Exterior smooth or with fine commarginal riblets, sometimes restricted to ventral half; strong riblets either side or umbo at dorsal margin. Interior smooth apart from anterior and posterior muscle scars; pallial line continuous with deep sinus posteriorly. Hinge as for family. Ligament internal. Shell exterior fawn, sometimes with darker rays. Interior white. Periostracum thin, dark brown. Size: Up to 105 mm in length. Distribution: Endemic to Australia: Mackay, Qld, southwards to Batemans Bay, NSW. Habitat: Most specimens are from beach washup, with a few taken live by trawlers down to 55 m depth.
