Cyclopecten kapalae Dijkstra, 1990 Description: Shell lightweight, translucent or opaque, valves about equal in size. Shape circular plus unequal sized auricles. Valves weakly inflated, left valve more convex than right. Byssal notch well-defined. Exterior of right valve with fine, regular commarginal lamellae; left valve with radial riblets and more prominent commarginal lamellae. Interior of both valves without radial ribs, opaque centrally, transparent marginally. Shell colour white. Size: Up to 6 mm in height. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific, from East Africa to Solomon Islands. In Australia, from Sandy Cape, Qld, southwards and around southern Australia, to Albany, WA, including Tas. Habitat: Subtidal. Live specimens known from 512-1840 m. Uncommon. Comparison: This species stands out in the NSW propeamussiid fauna because of the absence of internal radial ribs. Remarks: The commarginal sculpture apparent in the interior view in Fig. 1 is that on the outside of the shell. Fig. 1: Top: Off Sydney, 914-907 m (C.165060). Bottom: East of Broken Bay, NSW, in 822-877 m (C.165470). |
