Tetraphora iniqua (Jousseaume, 1898) Description: Shell sinistral. Protoconch plankotrophic, of 4½-5 whorls, with one fine spiral thread and numerous axial riblets. Teleoconch whorls with 4 beaded spiral cords and axial costae; spirals 1 and 3 commence immediately after protoconch, spiral 2 commences on 3rd to 5th whorl; spirals 1-3 of similar size by penultimate whorl. Spiral 4 partly exposed at suture on all whorls. Another two spirals on base (numbered 5 and 6), weak, smooth. Axial costae of similar strength to spirals, nodulose at intersections, 17-24 on penultimate whorl. Outer lip of aperture flared, anterior siphonal canal short and slightly upturned, posterior canal a broad triangular notch. Protoconch colour buff white. Teleoconch colour similar to protoconch, with a brown line around spirals 1, 4 and 5. Size: Mature shells 2.6 - 7.8 mm in length. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific. In Australia, known from a few lots from Queensland and only two from NSW: Angourie, NSW and Long Reef, Collaroy, NSW. Habitat: Known from beach washup and intertidal rock washings. Comparison: This species is easily recognized by the brown lines in some spirals. Synonymy: Mesophora sardonyx Laseron, 1958 is a synonym. Figs. 1, 2: 6833-1 6834-1 Yamba, NSW (C.118577) |
