Gari modesta (Deshayes, 1855)

Description:   Shape elongate or elongate-ovate, umbo central; weak broad ridge from umbo to postero-ventral margin on both valves; anterior end rounded, ventral margin straight or weakly convex, posterior end broader than anterior end. Exterior surface with weak, irregular, commarginal ridges overlaid by broader, flat, oblique cords. Interior pale purple, smooth; muscle scars and pallial line well-defined, pallial sinus extending forward past midline. Hinge right valve with 2 bifid cardinal teeth, left valve with 2 cardinal teeth, the anterior stronger. Ligament: external, long, attached on raised nymphs. Shell colour pale pinkish purple or bluish violet, occasionally pale orange, sometimes with vague reddish rays. Periostracum thin, rusty brown, almost always lost.

Size: Up to 27 mm in length, usually 18-24 mm for adults.

Distribution:  Endemic to Australia: from southern Great Barrier Reef southwards and around southern Australia to south-western WA, including Tas.

Habitat: Subtidal, 4-205 m depth, in coarse sand or grit, sometimes with mud, in areas of considerable water flow such as harbour mouths (Willan, 1993).

Comparison: ee G. lessoni.

Synonymy: Previously recognised synonyms are Psammobia angusta Deshayes, 1855, Psammobia menkeana Deshayes, 1855, Psammobia temperata Cotton & Godfrey, 1938, Milligaretta venta Iredale, 1936.
