Monia deliciosa Iredale, 1936

Description: Fragile, translucent. Shape irregular, approximately circular or ovate, lower (right) valve flat or weakly concave, upper (left) valve flat or weakly convex. Lower valve with large byssal hole opening at dorsal edge. Exterior of valves smooth with concentric growth lines. Interior smooth, with 2 poorly defined muscle scars. Hinge without teeth. Shell colour translucent white internally and externally.

Size: Up to 44 mm in height.

Distribution: The Australian Museum holds specimens from Low Isles, Qld, southwards to Cape Everard, Vic. There are also CSIRO survey records of unconfirmed identification from northern and central Qld.

Habitat: In NSW, known from 100-400 m depth. Uncommon.

Comparison: This is similar to A. zelandica as the external sculpture is similarly weak and the colour is also white, but it is less inflated, the muscle attachment zone is poorly defined and the muscle scars are hardly visible.

Fig. 1: Off Gabo Island, Vic. 146 m depth (C.047434).
