Wallucina assimilis (Angas, 1868) Description: A small-sized, thin-shelled lucinid. Shell subcircular, moderately inflated, umbo on midline, lunule shallow. Exterior with fine, commarginal ridges without radial threads (Under magnification some specimens show radials in the internal shell structure that are not on the exterior surface). Interior with radial lines, entire margin weakly denticulate; posterior muscle scar well-defined, anterior scar about same size; pallial line in blocks. Hinge right valve with single cardinal tooth and 2 smaller posterior laterals, anterior lateral tooth tiny to indistinct; left valve with 2 cardinal teeth, posterior lateral small and anterior lateral indistinct. Ligament internal, with long, narrow attachment area. Shell colour white. Size: Up to 15 mm high. Distribution: Port Stephens, NSW, southwards and around southern Australia, then northwards to Ningaloo Reef, WA, including Tas. Habitat: Common in intertidal and shallow subtidal seagrass beds. Comparison: This species occurs in similar habitat to Pillucina pisidium but it lacks the radial sculpture of that species and is less inflated. Remarks: Radials internally in the shell structure can sometimes be seen, but these are not apparent on the external surface. Fig. 1: Interior and exterior views (Specimen 1) Sydney (C.018522).
