Family  Cuvierinidae

This is a family of sea butterflies previously placed as a subfamily in the Cavoliniidae. Cuvierinids have a completely transparent bottle-shaped external shell up to 10 mm long. The aperture is simple and rounded. The needle-like protoconch is situated below the adult shell and closed off from it by a septum. The protoconch, together with part of the adult shell, is detached during life.

Only one species of this family is recorded from NSW.

Cuvierina columnella (Rang, 1827)
