Benthocardiella burtonae Middelfart, 2002 Description: Shell minute. Prodissoconch smooth, domed centrally, rim thickened, separated by a strongly thickened ridge from adult shell. Shape nearly circular, apex on midline. Exterior sculpture restricted to weak commarginal growth lines. Interior smooth apart from muscle scars, margin smooth. Hinge strong, of condylocardiid style. Ligament internal. Shell translucent or opaque white. Size: Up to 1.4 mm in length. Distribution: Known only from Port Stevens southwards to Green Cape, NSW. Habitat: Known from beach washup and down to 73 m. The AMS collection holds only 7 lots, suggesting that the species is uncommon. Comparison: This species is distinguished in NSW by its nearly circular shape, domed prodissoconch and sculpture restricted to commarginal growth lines.
